Ramsey Ramiro Muniz was arrested on March 11, 1994, in Lewisville, Texas. The events leading to his arrest began in Houston the day before that date. (T.R. 197-1990).

On March 10, 1994, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent Kimberly Elliott received a telephone call in Dallas from the DEA Office in Houston asking her to maintain surveillance on a man (later identified as Donacio Medina) flying from Houston and arriving at Dallas’s Love field. (Id.). At approximately 6:00 p.m. on that date, Agent Elliott saw a man at Love Field airport fitting the description supplied by the Houston DEA office meet Muniz in the airport. The two of them were met at the curb by a man driving a gray car. (T.R. 100-200, 390). The gray car, with three people in it, was followed north from the airport to the Frisco, Texas, area when the surveillance was discontinued. (T.R. 200).

Soon after the surveillance had been discontinued, Agent Elliott received another phone call from the Houston DEA office during which she was given a telephone and a room number for a Ramada Inn in Lewisville, Texas. (T.R. 201-202). Agent Elliott went to the Ramada Inn at 10:30 p.m. on March 10, 1994, and spoke with some of its employees. (T.R. 202). She learned that Muniz had checked into the Ramada Inn under his own name. She took copies of his business card left by him at the front desk and of the telephone toll records for the motel’s rooms. (T.R. 204-206). Agent Elliott also wrote down the license plate of the card parked in the parking lot. (T.R. 202), Surveillance was discontinued until the following morning.

How many of us can imagine all Nelson Mandela suffered during his 27 years behind bars in his homeland; and how many of us can imagine all Ramsey Muñiz continues to suffer in his homeland after 18 years behind bars?

Both men were practicing attorneys who fought against the poverty, exploitation and oppression of their native peoples, and both men received life sentences for their hard work and dedication to these worthy causes. After his death sentence was commuted to a life sentence, Mr. Mandela was finally freed due to growing public pressure, however, and then elected to serve, as the first indigenous President of South Africa by his people.

In contrast, Mr. Muñiz, a 68 year-old indigenous Americano who has struggled his entire life for Latino rights, and even ran for Governor of Texas, has yet to be freed.

There are over 650 million Latinos in the Americas and Caribbean Islands including over 55 million in the USA alone. Latinos have been robbed of our ancestral lands and freedoms, and divided against each other much like Africa’s indigenous peoples, so our racist oppressors can continue, to subject us to endless injustices and inequities in our native lands with impunity.

Our oppressors frame, imprison, torture and even kill some of our best leaders, to keep us all under control and oppressed. They falsely accuse and disgrace many of our leaders on a routine basis, so we will be left with no strong advocates or role models for our impoverished, exploited and oppressed barrios, colonias, campos and communities.

Like the apartheid regime that put Mr. Mandela, a genuine advocate for his people behind bars, the racist state of Texas put our champion advocate, Ramsey Muñiz, unjustly behind bars, and threw away the key, too. It was the indigenous people of South Africa who freed their devoted advocate from prison, and it is the indigenous people of America who must free Ramsey Muñiz, as well.

President Barack Obama has the authority to free Mr. Muñiz by commuting his life sentence. Every time President Obama visits your area, you should ask him to free Mr. Muñiz, immediately; and you can write him and your congressional leaders and senators on behalf of Mr. Muñiz, too.

This was dirty water that was for cleaning…The tips of the hoses were also covered in cow excrement.”Margarito Martinez says that he was forced to work without breaks for eating or drinking. When he and other workers tried to complain about the drinking water, they were given a very clear indication of how much management cared about them.

“During a meeting, we told the supervisor we needed water to drink. He responded by telling us to drink from the drums where the cows drank. He told us that none of the cows had died and neither would we. The owner carried a shotgun in his pick-up and he threatened to kill us if we damaged any equipment, any fences, any walls or any vehicles…We were all very frightened!”

WASHINGTON—The U.S. has “a window of opportunity” to defeat al Qaeda’s central leadership in Pakistan in the wake of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, the CIA’s new director David Petraeus said Tuesday.

Al Qaeda and its affiliates, however, continue to pose a serious threat to U.S. security, Mr. Petraeus said in his first public remarks since taking over the Central Intelligence Agency last week. “We need to recognize the need to be in this for the long haul,” he said. “Much work remains to be done.”

Mr. Petraeus referred in his testimony to the terrorist threat timed to coincide with last weekend’s 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, but only as an example of how agencies are working more closely together than before. He said the terror threat, while credible, remains unconfirmed.

It’s certainly no secret that the government’s Senior Executive Service has a diversity problem. The problem has been repeatedly documented with statistics that show SES doesn’t begin to reflect the racial and gender diversity of the nation it serves.

The good news is President Obama recently signed an executive order “to Promote Diversity and Inclusion in the Federal Workforce.” The bad news is projections indicate that by 2030 Latinos will remain “vastly underrepresented” in the SES, according to a report scheduled for release Thursday by the Center for American Progress (CAP), a liberal think tank.

Police officer Manuel Ramos didn’t talk to prosecutors who were considering charges against him in the death of a homeless, mentally ill man who died after a violent fight with police _ but in the end, according to a district attorney, his own voice may have done him in.

As Ramos snapped on a pair of latex gloves and leaned over a confused Kelly Thomas, prosecutors say, his body microphone and surveillance tape captured an angry threat: “Now, see my fists? They are getting ready to `F’ you up.”

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas called the statement the “turning point” from which a routine July 5 police stop spiraled into an explosion of violence that eventually involved six police officers and left Thomas unconscious and in a pool of his own blood. He was removed from life support and died five days later.

As much as we would like to see every homeless person in Genesee County off the streets and living in relative comfort, that will never happen.

Society’s safety net not only has some gaping holes in it, some folks decide not to use.

That applies to the men Burton police recently evicted from the “Tent City,” where they have been living in good weather for years on an overgrown section of a former General Motors parking lot near the Flint-Burton border.

Some neighbors said they knew about the men and had no problem with them being there. Some even paid the men to do odd jobs.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says he backs immigration reform, announcing last month an initiative to ease deportation policies, but he has sent home more than 1 million illegal immigrants in 2 1/2 years — on pace to deport more in one term than George W. Bush did in two.

The Obama administration had deported about 1.06 million as of Sept. 12, against 1.57 million in Bushs two full presidential terms.This seeming contradiction between rhetoric and reality is a key element of debate over U.S. immigration policy, and stakes are high for 2012s presidential election as Obama faces criticism from both conservatives and liberals.
